RFK’s Autism Announcement: What it Means for Families

I was very inspired to write this article because I felt so strongly about the new advice given by RFK. As someone dedicated to offering comprehensive parent support and empowerment for Autism, I wanted to help break down some of the complicated jargon that families are being bombarded with, unravel together and help you to make informed choices with all the info.

Since the announcement by Robert F. Kennedy Jr., my inbox has been absolutely crammed with messages from families feeling like they have failed their children due to taking specific actions in pregnancy or are completely anxious about the prospect of missing out on a type of magic bullet presented to them by a mainstream government. For me, in some ways, it feels like there is a new hope. For the first time in my lifetime, there is an awareness of the biology, immune vulnerability, nutrient pathways and the lived reality of families whose children are labelled “autistic” and left to struggle and never understood. To illuminate the factors driving this diagnosis feels great! In a mainstream world, not behind the shadows, not being made to feel crazy, not a conspiracy theory. Woohoo!

Because here is the bitter truth of the matter:

We shout from the rooftops about social inclusion, equal rights and accessible education, but when it comes to health care, children on the neurodivergent spectrum are not included at all. And that is a fact. Their symptoms get lumped under “that’s just autism” and dismissed. I have had children from the same family come to me in practice, one diagnosed and the other not. The non-diagnosed child had lots of labs run by the GP. The diagnosed child was told, 'These symptoms are part of this diagnosis'. This is a total outrage and injustice for these children. Especially when they had the exact same symptoms! Crazy and scary at the same time. A narrative I am very passionate about changing! I often think about children whose gut issues are so painful that they would cause you to hurt yourself or other around you because you cannot say; 'I hurt', elopement and putting yourself in danger to a point where going outside into a typical day out can mean life and death, self injurous behaviour to the point where you could cause yourself a brain injury, seizures so frequent and severe that life is just existing. These are just a few of the symptoms I witness in my daily practice and have witnessed in my own child. One who, at one point, was given a trampoline as her only outlet, nothing to look beneath the surface, when her body inside was screaming.

Why Individualised Care Isn’t Optional: It’s Imperative

At The Happy Healthy Unicorn we know first-hand that autism is not one thing. Some children are immobilised by biomedical crises; others live independently but carry neurological differences. Their biology is not the same and their needs are not the same either.

For one child, like ours, autism may mean sleepless nights, constant pain, debilitating gut issues, self-injury and an immune system that attacks the brain to a level which makes the child psychotic, or fall into such a deep OCD that their entire existence is tightly wound only to serve their constant compulsion. Life as a child should experience it, disappears, and their world can shrink to survival: every sound too loud, every texture unbearable. They are immobilised by what is happening inside their body. For another, autism may mean a beautifully wired brain that thinks differently, solves problems creatively and thrives when supported in the right environment.

When we treat all autistic children as though they share the same needs, we miss the point entirely. Although it is great that a conversation is finally happening, the one-size-fits-all all approach is actually unhelpful. And this is my stance on the new information recently published.

Leucovorin, Undermethylation & the Serotonin Trap

Leucovorin (a form of folinic acid) was recommended by RFK as a therapy for autism. And for a small subset of kids, it can be useful. However, most children with autism are undermethylated as outlined by William J. Walsh at the Walsh Institute.

In these children, it can backfire. Undermethylation means the body’s ability to use methyl groups for gene expression, neurotransmitter production and detoxification is compromised. We essentially create too few methyl groups. Flooding the system with folate when methylation is low can tip the balance the wrong way, increasing serotonin transporter activity.  Serotonin transporters pull serotonin back into the nerve cells, and if they’re too active, less serotonin is left available. This depletes usable serotonin and creates agitation, aggression or regression. Individuals who are undermethylated show symptoms such as OCD, perfectionism, rigidity and low mood.

Folate also robs the cell’s nucleus of methyl (methyl being the key to life and functionality), which actually makes symptoms of undermethylation worse. I have found in practice, when exploring a holistic individualised naturopathic approach, that almost all of the children prescribed Leucovorin have regressed. I urge parents to take a more individualised approach before embarking on a magic bullet therapy without knowing their child’s biochemistry.

What Is Cerebral Folate Deficiency (CFD)?

The main reason Leucovorin is recommended is to help children with a condition called Cerebral Folate Deficiency (CFD). Studies suggest that up to 70% of children with autism may have these antibodies. This means that the brain can’t get the fuel it needs.

In most cases, CFD is an autoimmune condition, which means the child’s immune system has become overwhelmed or confused and starts producing antibodies that block important folate receptors in the brain.

This can mean that a child may have normal folate levels in the blood but their brain is essentially starved of folate because the “doorway” that carries folate into the brain is blocked by these antibodies, called Folate Receptor Alpha Autoantibodies (FRAAs). It is also why the Folate Antibody Receptor Test (FRAT) is commonly recommended to check for these.

Why flooding with folate can be harmful

By simply flooding this system with folate, we are not addressing the true underlying cause, and hence, this child’s immune system continues to overreact and attack itself. This leads to more complications because the infections, gut issues and toxin load are not addressed and continue to cause harm to the child.

Some of the other things that can create the folate blockage are:

  • Dairy proteins (especially casein), which can mimic folate receptors

  • Chronic infections such as Strep, EBV or Mycoplasma

  • Gut imbalances, which allow toxins to leak into the body

  • Environmental toxins and heavy metals

If we give folinic acid or methylfolate when the receptors are blocked, the brain cannot properly take it up. Instead of entering the brain to support neurotransmitter production and energy metabolism, folate accumulates in the blood and tissues. This can overload alternative pathways, increasing the production of reactive oxygen species (free radicals).

In children who are undermethylated (as defined by Walsh Institute research), this can further disrupt serotonin regulation, dopamine metabolism and nitric oxide pathways, leading to agitation, sleep disturbances or even behavioural regression.

In other words, simply ‘flooding’ the system with folate without first removing the block, calming the immune response and repairing gut and detox pathways risks creating oxidative stress rather than correcting the deficiency. This is why some children worsen under folate therapy if these upstream issues are not addressed.

Supporting the Brain Means Supporting the Whole Body

To help folate reach the brain safely, we need to:

  1. Remove the block by addressing infections, gut imbalances and immune triggers

  2. Calm the immune system to reduce antibodies

  3. Repair the gut and improve digestion

  4. Reduce toxic load from metals or environmental chemicals

  5. Carefully supply folate once the foundation is prepared

From a diet and immune perspective, dairy proteins, gut imbalances (like certain bacteria) and environmental toxins can all contribute to blocking folate transport. When the immune system is constantly activated by infections or toxins, it can start producing antibodies that target the body’s own systems, including folate receptors. So it is a vicious cycle. This is why our children are sensitive and complex, and a very tailored, individualised approach is essential

At the same time, gut-driven immune activation can make things worse, increasing gut permeability, releasing microbial toxins, lowering antioxidant levels like glutathione and creating oxidative stress.

Paracetamol: The Glutathione Link

Paracetamol (acetaminophen) is everywhere: in pregnancy, in childhood fevers, for pain. But it has a hidden cost: it depletes glutathione, the body’s master antioxidant and detoxifier.

What happens in the body:

Most paracetamol is processed safely. But a small fraction becomes NAPQI, a toxic by-product. Normally, glutathione mops this up. If glutathione is already low, NAPQI damages mitochondria, the liver and the brain.

Some children are more vulnerable due to:

  • Genetic weak spots in detox enzymes

  • Sulphation bottlenecks (autistic children often have low sulphate levels)

  • Already-low glutathione from chronic oxidative stress

  • Weakened immune defence: families often notice, “they never fully get over colds”

Pregnancy studies:

The research is mixed. Some show links between prenatal exposure and autism/ADHD, some don’t. But the biological mechanism, glutathione depletion, is clear.

Practical takeaway and research:

Research suggests that autistic individuals are more likely to have depleted glutathione levels. The best coirse of action for fevers is to avoid paracetamol and use ibuprofen instead. Support glutathione pathways with things like Epsom salt baths, broccoli sprouts, molybdenum, B6, selenium, NAC and good nutrition.

Alternatives to Paracetamol for Parents

Avoiding paracetamol for relief can sound impossible and finding alternatives can often be a challenge. However, it doesn’t have to be. If you’re looking for effective, safer alternatives, you might want to consider homoeopathy. Which is used often through the years with my own children, and was very effective.

  • Fever - For a fever consider using Belladonna, Aconite or Ferrum phosphoricum. These are often used for sudden, high fevers, hot/red skin and restlessness as well as gradual onset or mild fever.

  • Pain - Try using Chamomilla for teething or irritability, Bryonia for joint/muscle aches.

  • Inflammation / General Discomfort - Arnica montana, which is commonly used for bruising, trauma or soreness, can support your healing and reduce inflammation.

Additionally, Chamomile and Ginger tea can help. Chamomile tea is calming, has mild analgesic effects and can support your sleep. Ginger tea can reduce mild inflammation and nausea.

A Call to Action For Parents, Practitioners & Systems

Parents:

Know this: there is hope for every child, no matter the diagnosis. But hope isn’t passive. It is active. You have to ask the questions: “What’s behind the label of autism in my child?”, “Are we looking at nutrient pathways? Immune activation? Gut health? Detox capacity?”.  We can love our children unconditionally while still advocating for their optimal health - the two are not mutually exclusive.

Practitioners:

Do not accept “autism” as a one-size-fits-all certified label. All children have unique biology. Your approach must reflect that. Include diet, immune, gut, nutrients, and toxins. Treat them with the individualised care that all humans deserve

Systems:

Inclusion must mean inclusive health care, not only inclusive schools. When the medical system ignores half the child’s symptoms because “that’s the autism”, we betray them.

Underneath the word autism lies a complex map of biology, immune, gut, nutrient and environmental interfaces and each child has their own terrain to explore when considering a holistic individualised naturopathic approach. When we match our care to their individual biology, we stop su

rviving and start healing. We stop managing symptoms and start restoring lives.

At The Happy Healthy Unicorn we offer holistic support for Autism families. Therefore, if you would like to further discuss your child’s needs, We’d be happy to help with a short conversation or one of my more thorough 1 to 1 virtual Autism consultations

Together, we can help your autistic child move towards a happier future with a specialised, holistic, individualised, naturopathic approach.
